Unsedated Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE)
One of the Few Places in the Nation Offering TNE
Children with conditions of the esophagus often need a test called an 鈥渦pper endoscopy." In children and adults, these tests usually require general anesthesia, which means a day at the hospital and food restrictions 鈥 plus a lot of coordination for families.聽
We offer a test called an 鈥渦nsedated GI transnasal endoscopy,鈥 where kids 10 and older can now have their endoscopy in an outpatient setting. That鈥檚 because with a TNE, our Nemours gastroenterologist (GI doctor) uses a local anesthetic and the camera travels through the nose.
The benefits of a TNE as compared to a sedated endoscopy include:
- Zero risks from general anesthesia 鈥 and no IV needle
- One hour average time from set-up to going home聽
- Two hours of food limits instead of the usual nine or more
- 60% lower cost (approximately) than a traditional endoscopy
